International Skin Pigmentation Day

May 25 is International Skin Pigmentation Day.

Skin pigmentation disorders occur when something causes the melanin in your skin to change. These changes may be due to genetics, diseases, hormones, medication or sun exposure.

Types of Pigmentation Disorders

Hyperpigmentation—when a part of your skin becomes darker than the rest. This type of pigmentation can be caused by acne scars, trauma to the skin, pregnancy and sun exposure.

Hypopigmentation—when the skin is lighter than the rest. This can come from skin trauma, genetics and inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Depigmentation—when your skin has zero pigment. The most common cause of this is vitiligo, an autoimmune disease that causes white patches of skin.
